Sanat nedir?

Her yerde duyduğumuz sanat kelimesini aslında tanımlamak, çok da kolay değildir. Nelerin sanatı kapsayacağı veya kapsamayacağını belirlemeye yönelik çeşitli değerler mevcuttur. Bu durum da yer yer tartışma konusu olmuştur. Avrupa’da bugün bilinen şekliyle sanat kelimesi Rönesans’la kullanılmaya başlar, daha öncesinde direkt olarak bir tanımla karşı karşıya kalmayız. Sanatın Rönesans sonrası tanımı, bugün kullanılan tanımın temelini oluşturur. Bu tanım; bu tür işler yapmak için özel eğitimden geçmiş birinin sıra dışı yetenek ve esinle yarattığı resim, heykel, çizim, yazı veya binadır. Ne var ki tanımın bir sorunu vardır; insan uğraşı sonucunda ortaya çıkan icraatlar, sanatın dışında kalır. Eğitimsiz ama yetenekli insanların ellerinden çıkan birçok şey sanat olarak kabul edilmez. Yüksek sanat ve halk sanatı anlamına gelen alt sanat şeklindeki kavram bütünleri de buradan doğmuştur. Vatikan Müzesi’nde bulunan Apollo Belvedere ve Belvedere Torso heykelleri yüksek sanat kapsamına girerken, 19. yüzyılda  Afrika ve Pasifik gibi bölgelerde ele alınmış resim, heykel veya mimari eserler de alt sanatın kapsamına girer. Günümüzde , herhangi bir beceri ürünü olarak görünmeyen ve oldukça basit addedilen modern sanatın dahi bu kategoriye sokulmaya çabalandığına şahitlik ediyoruz. Modern sanatı bu şekilde dışlamak ve yokmuş gibi davranmak elbette doğru değildir. Fakat sanat kelimesinin tanımındaki kavramsal karmaşa, süre içerisinde değişime uğrasa da özünde toplum tarafından her şeyin sanat olarak benimsenememesine yol açmıştır.

İnsanların büyük bir çabayla ele aldıkları ve yaratım sınırlarını zorladıkları şeyleri sanat dışı bırakmayıp bu edimler için esnek davranmak, sanatın kapsayıcılığı konusunda bir açıklık sağlayacaktır. Bir diğer yandan bu icraatları sanat yapıtı olarak kabul etmek, sanatı daha fazla sorgulamak ve daha fazla araştırmak için de bir zemin hazırlayacaktır. Bu yüzden, neden kısıtlanmış bir sanat tanımıyla yetinelim?

The Definition of ART

It is not easy to define the word “art” nowadays. There are various values ​​to determine what will or will not include art. This is also a controversial concept from time to time. The word art, as it is known today in Europe, started to be used in the Renaissance, we did not encounter a direct definition before. The post-Renaissance definition of art forms the basis of the definition used today: “It is  painting, sculpture, drawing, writing or building created with extraordinary talent and inspiration by someone who has undergone special training to do this type of work”. However, this definition has a problem; the actions that emerge as a result of human endeavor are excluded from art. Many things that come from the hands of various uneducated but talented people are not considered art. The concepts of High Art and Folk Art were born from here. While the Apollo Belvedere and Belvedere Torso sculptures in the Vatican Museum fall within the scope of High Art; paintings, sculptures or architectural works that were made in regions such as Africa and the Pacific in the 19th century also fall within the scope of folk art. Today, we see that even modern art -which does not seem to be a product of any skill and is considered quite simple- is trying to be included in Folk Art. It is definetely not right to exclude modern art in this way and to pretend that it does not exist. However, the conceptual confusion in the definition of the word “art” has caused the society  not to adopt everything as art, although it has changed over time.”

To be flexible for these acts by not excluding things that people have handled with great effort and pushed the limits of creation, will provide a clarity about the inclusivity of this notion. On the other hand, accepting these things as works of art, will also prepare the ground for questioning and researching the -art- more and more. So why settle for a restricted definition  then?
