Sinema sanatının zirvesi, Oscar’lar geliyor!

Yılın o zamanı geldi çattı… Bu sene Oscar’lar yine çok ses getirecek yapımları ağırlıyor. Altın Küre ödüllü “Everything Everywhere All At Once” filmi, Oscar’da 11 kategoride aday gösterilerek en çok adaylık alan film oldu. Dokuzar adaylıkla onu, Alman yapımı film “All Quiet on the Western Front” ile İrlanda yapımı kara-komedi “The Banshees of Inisherin” izliyor. “Elvis”, biyografik bir yapım olarak 8 dalda adaylık kazanırken, Steven Spielberg’ün “The Fabelmans” filmi 7 dalda; Cate Blanchett’in de “En iyi Kadın Oyuncu” kategorisinde aday olduğu “Tár” ile Tom Cruise’un “Top Gun Maverick” filmleri, altışar dalda aday gösterilmiş durumda.

‘Tár”, Cate Blanchett’e Eylül ayında gerçekleşen Venedik Film Festivali’nde en iyi kadın oyuncu ödülünü getirmişti. Hem Venedik Film Festivali ile, hem de sonrasında ABD’de de vizyona girmesiyle, her zaman olumlu yönde eleştiriler almış bir film olarak karşımıza çıkıyor Tár. Cate Blanchett’in ise en iyi kadın oyuncu Oscar’ının en güçlü adayı olduğu konusunda birçok eleştirmen hemfikir. Tár aynı zamanda yönetmen Todd Field’ın, 16 yıl aradan sonra ilk kez yazıp yönettiği film olmasıyla da ayrı önem taşıyor. Konu itibariyle filmde Cate Blanchett’in canlandırdığı orkestra şefi ve besteci Lydia Tár’ın hikâyesi anlatılıyor. Türkiye’de 10 Mart tarihinde filmin vizyona girmesi planlanıyor.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once”, birçok kategoride Oscar’ın en güçlü adayı diyebiliriz. Başrolünde bulunan Michelle Yeoh, Altın Küre’de “En İyi Kadın Oyuncu” ödülünü kazanmış, şimdi Akademi Ödülleri’nde yine aynı kategoride aday durumda.
Filmde aslında her şeyin her yerde aynı anda gerçekleştiği, paralel evrenler arası sonsuz bir döngü mevcut.  Bu sonsuz olasılıklar, anlık yolculukları ve ani geçişleri içinde barındırıyor. Filmin bu fantastik kuruluşunun ardında duygu yüklü bir aile hikayesi de var. Film izleyiciyi; dünyayı kurtarmakla, bir aileyi kurtarmak arasındaki paralellik üzerine derin düşüncelere itiyor. Geçen sene vizyona girmiş olan Everything Everywhere All at Once, şu sıralar ise Netflix’den izlenebilir.

6 Ocak 2023’de vizyona giren, yönetmen Steven Spielberg’ün “The Fabelmans” filmi, içerisinde otobiyografik unsurlar barındıran bir yapım. Filmde, Spielberg’ün tüm olayları Sammy’nin bakış açısıyla anlattığını görüyoruz. Sammy’nin annesi Mitzi ise filmde ikincil ana karakter konumunda. Spielberg; Mitzi ve Sammy üzerinden kendi hikayesini psikolojik bir serüven üzerinden ele almayı seçmiş belli ki. Sinema ve anne sevgisinin birlikteliğini, bir değişim süreci üzerinden derin bir şekilde işlemiş diyebiliriz film için.

Türkiye’de vizyona 3 Şubat tarihinde girecek Martin McDonagh’ın yönetmenliğindeki “The Banshees of Inisherin”de Tár gibi, Venedik Film Festivali’nde oldukça ses getirmiş, Donagh’a “En İyi Senaryo, Colin Farrell’a ise “En İyi Erkek Oyuncu” ödüllerini kazandırmış bir film. “En İyi Film” dahil, 3 dalda da Altın Küre ödülü kazanan film, 1920’lerin İrlanda’sının batı kıyısında bulunan Inisherin adlı bir adada geçiyor. Farrell’a ilk kez Oscar adaylığı getirmiş olmasıyla da ilgileri üzerine toplayan yapımın Oscar adaylıkları, “En İyi Film”, “En İyi Yönetmen” (Martin McDonagh), “En İyi Orijinal Senaryo” (Martin McDonagh), “En İyi Erkek Oyuncu” (Colin Farrell), “En İyi Yardımcı Erkek Oyuncu” (Brendan Gleeson / Barry Keoghan), “En İyi Yardımcı Kadın Oyuncu” (Kerry Condon), “En İyi Özgün Müzik” (Carter Burwell) ve “En İyi Kurgu” (Mikkel E. G. Nielsen) dallarında bulunuyor.

Geçen sene gösterime giren “Elvis” ise bir başka ses getiren işlerden. Filmin ilginç yanı, sadece Elvis Presley’nin hayat hikayesine odaklanmaktansa, Presley’nin menajeri Albay Tom Parker ile olan ilişkilerine ve hayatındaki kırılma noktalarına yoğunlaşması aslında. Filmin Oscar adaylıkları; “En İyi Film”, “En İyi Kostüm Tasarımı”, “En İyi Yapım Tasarımı”, “En İyi Görüntü Yönetimi”, “En İyi Kurgu”, “En İyi Makyaj ve Saç Tasarımı”, “En İyi Ses” ve Elvis Presley’i canlandıran Austin Butler’ın, performansıyla “En İyi Erkek Oyuncu” dallarında olmak üzere toplam 8 dalda seyrediyor.

Geçen sene gösterimde olan Tom Cruise’lu “Top Gun: Maverick”, “En İyi Film” dalında güçlü adaylardan. Tom Cruise, üç kez “Altın Küre” kazanmış, üç kez de Oscar’a aday gösterilmesine rağmen, bu ödüllerden hiçbirini alamamış başarılı bir oyuncu. “En İyi Erkek Oyuncu” dalında Cruise’a bir kesim tarafından şans verileceği beklenmiş olsa da, maalesef herhangi bir adaylığı bulunmuyor. Film, aslında bir devam filmi olarak karşımıza çıkıyor. Usta yönetmen Tony Scott’dan filmi devralan Joseph Kosinski’nin başarısı bir yana, Lady Gaga’nın “Hold My Hand” şarkısının da filme çok yakışmış olduğunu söyleyelim. Aynı zamanda Top Gun: Maverick, 2022 gişesinde 1 milyar dolar barajını geçen de ilk film.

Bu işler dışında “All Quiet on the Western Front”, Edward Berger’ın yönetmenliğinde 1. Dünya Savaşı’nın son yıllarında geçen Alman epik savaş karşıtı bir film olarak Oscar adaylıkları ile karşımıza çıkan bir başka film. Erich Maria Remarque’ın 1929 tarihli aynı adlı romanından uyarlanmış olan filmin sinemaya ilk yansımasının 1930 yılında, Lewis Milestone yönetmenliğindeki işi olduğunu görüyoruz. “En İyi Film” dahil 9 dalda Oscar’a aday olan filmin yönetmeni Edward Berger yapım için, “Almanca olarak yazılan ve dünya çapında çok satan bu roman, muhtemelen edebiyat tarihinde savaşın insanlık dışı dehşetini en iyi şekilde yansıtan eserdir. Benim için bu romanı ilk kez Almanca bir filme uyarlamak, zorlu ancak son derece heyecan verici bir projeydi” diyor.

“Avatar: The Way of Water”, “Women Talking” ve “Triangle of Sadness” filmlerinin de “En İyi Film” dalında Oscar adaylıkları bulunuyor. Bunlardan “Triangle of Sadness”, hem yönetmeni Ruben Östlund ile “En İyi Yönetmen”, hem “En İyi Orijinal Senaryo”, hem de “En İyi Film” dallarında yarışıyor. Film; Fransa, Almanya, Türkiye, İngiltere, İsveç, İsviçre, ABD ve Yunanistan ortak yapımı olarak karşımıza çıkıyor.Filmin, dünya prömiyerini Cannes Film Festivali’nde yapmış olduğunu ve Altın Palmiye’yi kazandığını da söyleyelim.

Biraz da müziklerden bahsedelim… “En İyi Özgün Şarkı” kategorisinde beş aday mevcut. Bunlar; Applause (Tell It Like a Woman), Hold My Hand (Top Gun: Maverick), Lift Me Up (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Naatu Naatu (RRR) ve This Is a Life (Everything Everywhere All at Once).

Parçalar arasında “Top Gun: Maverick” filmiyle öne çıkan Lady Gaga’nın Hold My Hand’i ve “Tell It Like a Woman” filminde yer alan Rihanna’nın Lift Me Up şarkısı, romantik ve ruhu dinlendiren bir yoğunluğa sahip. Hold My Hand; Lady Gaga ve Bloodpop tarafından, zor zamanların ardından dünyaya bir aşk mektupu olarak yazılmış. Tür olarak umut verici arena rock tınılarıya zenginleşen bir parça diyebiliriz. Rihanna’nın Lift Me Up parçası, Rihanna’nın güçlü vokalleriyle özdeşleşen klasik bir Rihanna R&B baladı. Sofia Carson’ın Applause’u ve Son Lux, Mitski ve David Byrne’ın This Is a Life şarkıları da yine yavaş tempoda dinlediğimiz parçalar. This is a Life, Art Pop türünde bir şarkı; pop tınılı ama yenilikçi ve şiirsel. “RRR” filmi ile yine aynı kategoride aday olan Rahul Sipligunj, M. M. Keeravani, Kala Bhairava’nın parçası Naatu Naatu, Hint Pop’u türünde, diğerlerine göre daha kıpır kıpır bir şarkı. Parça aynı zamanda Hindistan için de ayrı bir gurur kaynağı olarak görülüyor ve şarkının adaylığı ile tarih yazdığı düşünülüyor.

“En İyi Özgün Müzik” kategorisinde ise; Volker Bertelmann (All Quiet On The Western Front), Justin Hurwitz (Babylon), Carter Burwell (The Banshees Of Inisherin), Son Lux (Everything Everywhere All At Once) ve John Williams (The Fabelmans) ile yarışıyor.

12 Mart tarihinde Dolby Theatre’da 95. si düzenlenecek olan Akademi Ödülleri’ni hepimiz heyecanla bekliyoruz. Bakalım hangi yapımlar adından söz ettirmeye devam edecek, hangi yapımlar eli boş dönecek…

The Pinnacle of Cinema, The Oscars are right around the corner!

It’s that time of the year… This year, the Oscars are once again hosting productions that will make a lot of noise. The Golden Globe-winning film “Everything Everywhere All At Once” has 11 nominations at the Oscars. A German production “All Quiet on the Western Front” and the Irish black-comedy “The Banshees of Inisherin” come after with 9 nominations. “Elvis” has 8 nominations and Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” has 7 nominations. “Tár” with which Cate Blanchett was nominated in the “Actress in a Leading Role” category and Tom Cruise ‘s “Top Gun Maverick” were nominated in 6 categories.

‘Tár’, brought Cate Blanchett the “Actress in a Leading Role” award at the Venice Film Festival. It’s a film that has always received positive reviews after it was released in the Venice Film Festival and later in the USA. Many critics agree that Cate Blanchett is the strongest candidate for the Academy Award in the “Actress in a Leading Role” category. Tár also holds special significance as it is the first film written and directed by director Todd Field after 16 years. The film tells the story of the conductor and composer Lydia Tár, played by Cate Blanchett. Tár is scheduled to be released in Turkey on March 10th.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” is the strongest Oscar nominee in many categories. Starring Michelle Yeoh, who won the “Actress in a Leading Role” award at the Golden Globes, is now nominated for the same category at the Oscars. In the movie, there is an endless loop between parallel universes where everything happens everywhere at the same time. It contains endless possibilities, instant journeys and sudden transitions. There is an emotional family story behind this fantastic setting of the movie. The film makes the audience ponder over the parallel between saving the world and saving a family. The movie was released last year, and now it can be watched on Netflix.

As to “The Fabelmans”, which was directed by Steven Spielberg, it’s a production that contains autobiographical elements. In the movie, we see Spielberg telling all the events from Sammy’s point of view. Sammy’s mother Mitzi, is the secondary main character. It is obvious that Spielberg chose to reflect his own story with a psychological adventure through Mitzi and Sammy. We can say that the film has deeply processed the unity of cinema and mother’s love through a process of change. The Fabelmans was released in Turkey on January 6th.

Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin”, which will be released in Turkey on February 3rd, made quite a splash at the Venice Film Festival. The film won the “Original Screenplay” award and Colin Farrell won the “Actor in a Leading Role” award. The Banshees of Inisherin also won three Golden Globe awards, including “Best Picture”. The film takes place on an island called Inisherin, located on the west coast of Ireland in the 1920s. The Oscar nominations of the film, which attracts attention with the fact that it brought Farrell an Oscar nomination for the first time, are; “Best Picture”, “Directing” (Martin McDonagh), “Original Screenplay” (Martin McDonagh), “Actor in a Leading Role” (Colin Farrell), “Actor in a Supporting Role” (Brendan Gleeson / Barry Keoghan), “Actress in a Supporting Role” (Kerry Condon), “Original Score” (Carter Burwell), and “Film Editing” (Mikkel E. G. Nielsen).

“Elvis”, which was released last year, is one of the most talked about films of the year. The interesting thing about the movie is that instead of focusing only on Elvis Presley’s life story, it actually focuses on Presley’s relationships with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, and the breaking points in his life. The movie has 8 Oscar nominations; “Best Picture” (Baz Luhrmann, Catherine Martin, Gail Berman, Patrick McCormick and Schuyler Weiss, Producers), “Costume Design” (Catherine Martin), “Production Design” (Catherine Martin and Karen Murphy; Set Decoration: Bev Dunn), “Cinematography” (Mandy Walker) “Film Editing” (Matt Villa and Jonathan Redmond), “Makeup and Hairstyling” (Mark Coulier, Jason Baird and Aldo Signoretti, “Sound” (David Lee, Wayne Pashley, Andy Nelson and Michael Keller),” and “Actor in a Leading Role” (Austin Butler).

“Top Gun: Maverick” starring Tom Cruise, was released last year. It is surely one of the strong nominees in the “Best Picture” category. Tom Cruise here, won the “Golden Globe Awards” three times and was also nominated for three Oscars, but did not receive any of these awards. Although it was expected that Cruise would be given a chance in the “Actor in a Leading Role” category this year, unfortunately, he did not receive any nominations. The movie is actually a sequel. Aside from the success of Joseph Kosinski, who took over the film from master director Tony Scott, let’s say that Lady Gaga’s song “Hold My Hand” suits the movie in a pretty romantic way. At the same time, Top Gun: Maverick is the first movie to pass the $1 billion mark at the 2022 box office.

Apart from these films, let’s mention a bit of “All Quiet on the Western Front”. It is a German epic anti-war film directed by Edward Berger. Adapted from Erich Maria Remarque’s novel (1929) of the same title, we know that the first adaptation of the film on cinema was the work directed by Lewis Milestone in 1930. Edward Berger, the director of the film, said, “Written in German and a worldwide bestseller, this novel is arguably the best portrayal of the inhuman horrors of war in literary history. For me, adapting this novel into a German film for the first time was a challenging but extremely exciting project.”

“Avatar: The Way of Water”, “Women Talking” and “Triangle of Sadness” also received Oscar nominations for “Best Picture”. Of these, “Triangle of Sadness” competes with its director Ruben Östlund in the categories of “Directing”, “Original Screenplay” and “Best Picture”. The film is a co-production of France, Germany, Turkey, England, Sweden, Switzerland, USA and Greece. Not to mention that the production had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and won the Palme d’Or.

Let’s talk a little bit about the music… There are five nominees in the “Music (Original Song)” category. These are; Applause (Tell It Like a Woman), Hold My Hand (Top Gun: Maverick), Lift Me Up (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Naatu Naatu (RRR), and This Is a Life (Everything Everywhere All at Once).

Among the tracks, Lady Gaga’s Hold My Hand, which came to the fore in “Top Gun: Maverick”, and Rihanna’s Lift Me Up song in the movie “Tell It Like a Woman” have a romantic and soul-resting intensity. Hold My Hand was written by Lady Gaga and Bloodpop as a love letter to the world after tough times. As a genre, we can say that it has an enriching and hopeful arena rock tones. Rihanna’s Lift Me Up is a classic Rihanna R&B ballad with her powerful vocals. Sofia Carson’s Applause and Son Lux, Mitski and David Byrne’s This Is a Life are also songs we listen to at a slow tempo. This is a Life is an Art Pop song; pop-sounding yet innovative and poetic. Naatu Naatu, the song of Rahul Sipligunj, M. M. Keeravani, Kala Bhairava, was nominated in the same category with the RRR movie. It is much more lively than the other songs that were nominated. Naatu Naatu is an Indian Pop song and it is also seen as a source of pride for India, and the song’s nomination is thought to have made history.

In the category of “Music (Original Score)”; we see Volker Bertelmann (All Quiet On The Western Front), Justin Hurwitz (Babylon), Carter Burwell (The Banshees Of Inisherin), Son Lux (Everything Everywhere All At Once) and John Williams (The Fabelmans).

We are all looking forward to the 95th Oscar Awards, which will be held at the Dolby Theater this year on March 12th. Let’s see which films will continue to be mentioned, which films will return empty-handed…
