Emily Bronte and Wuthering Heights

EMILY BRONTE AND WUTHERING HEIGHTS

Brontë Sisters were significant writers of the Victorian Era. Because of the gender discrimination, women were under pressure and had no place in literature. But this inhibition did not stop Bronté sisters from writing so They started publishing their books under their pseudonyms; Currer Bell (Charlotte), Ellis Bell (Emilly), Acton Bell (Anne). Emilly’s ability to write poetery was discoverd by her sisters. Bronte sisters had written a poetry book. Although  it was sold only two copies, They did not give up writing .

Wuthering Heights was written between 1845 and 1846, while Charlotte was working on ‘The Professor’ and ‘Jane Eyre’, and Anne wrote ‘Agnes Gray’. Wuthering Heights (By Ellis Bell), was published in 1847, and attracted considerable critcal attention: many people were shocked and horrified by the sheer violence of author’s novel . When their brother died, his death marked the begining of Emily’s own illness. Her tuberculosis rapidly caused her death, perhaps because she refused to make any concession to her ill health. She died with heroic fortitude on December 19th, 1848, at the age of 30. Emily Bronté’s stern self-discipline and passionate creative vision have continued to entrance modern readers through her poetry and especially her materpiece, Wuthering Heights. Unlike the novels written in the same period, this novel has a glommy side. That’s why, it’s undoubtedly a crowd-pulling and profoundly affecting novel.

At the begining of the cases Mr. Earnshaw who is the owner of the Wuthering Heights adopted a boy around six years old who look like a gypsy. His name was Heathcliff and Mr. Earnshaw didn’t want to discrimination against the Heathcliff. Eventhought Catherine and Heathcliff got along with each other, Mr. Earnshaws second child, Hindley didn’t get on well with him. When Mr. Earnshaw died, Hindley turned into a black hearted young man and tortured Heathcliff. One day Heathcliff ran away from home due to Catherine’s word and didn’t come back for three years.

Heathcliff came back home with a brand-new personality and he became incredibly wealthy. Meanwhile things changed in both Heathcliff’s and Catherine’s life. She was married with Edgar Linton who is the abutting owner. Then Heathclif started taking revenge on everybody. With his comming the love of Catherine and Heathcliff filled their hearts again. Despite the fact that Mr. Linton loved Catherine so much She never loved him the way she loved Heathcliff. After al of the this suffering, Catherine passed away.

Here is my point: I defended Heathcliff at the begining as he was defensless and I hated Hidley. But when Heathcliff started to be a huge threat, I was devastated. Catherine’s spoiled attitude towards everyone was annoying but it was because she was untouchable. It may seem ridiculous but this novel was an engrossing one. I felt all the emotions at the same time as happiness, sadness, enthusiasm, doubtfulness and more. And with all this emotions, ‘Wuthering Heights’ is among the substantial classics appreciated by it’s readers.
